Have you ever thought about types of thinking?
Sounds interesting…!
Everyone on the earth has their own process of thinking. It is very intriguing that every though we have is not our own. It is already thought by someone else. These offbeat topics really interests me. Thinking refers to mental process of considering, evaluating, and processing information to form ideas, make decisions, or solve problems. It entails perception, attention, memory, learning, and reasoning. Now, let’s get started with the types of thinking as below:

- Filtering: It refers to a selective informed perspective. It magnifies events as good and bad. It is a very common practice of humankind to focus on only negatives because it hurts to the utmost and hit to subconscious mind. Example: A student received feedback on their assignment, which includes both positive and negative comments. However, they only focus on the negative comments and ignore the positive ones, thinking “I’m terrible student.”
- Polarization: It says that things are either good or bad, right or wrong, and no in between. You’re either perfect or you’re failure. We all have pre-defined notions about certain situations and blame ourselves for the same. Example: You’re either with me or against me.
- Overgeneralization: It is one of the relatable thinking where we come to conclusions based on a single piece of evidence or experience. If something bad happens once, out of fear that it will happen again. This leads to restricted life by avoiding experiences and losing on great opportunity on a single event or instance. Risks can open many doors of opportunities. Example: I have one bad experience with a flight, so I’ll never fly again.
- Mind reading: Mostly, we have our notions about ourselves. It happens due to our own projections, biases and misunderstanding. Don’t make pre-conceived notions. Example: I know they don’t like me.
- Catastrophizing: This type of thinking is also very relatable where we always assume that the absolute worse will happen. If you imagine the worst is always happening. Then, nothing can shock or surprise you. Eventually, nothing happens like that we have thought of. Example: If I fail this exam, my entire future is ruined.
- Personalization: The basic thinking error is that we interpret each experience, conversation, look as a clue to your worth and value. It is assuming that everything is about you, even when it’s not. Blaming ourselves is not the solutions instead understand the circumstances. Example: My friend didn’t call me back, they must be mad at me.
- Shoulds: We have a list of rules about what people should and should and shouldn’t do that we grew up believing were unquestionably true. Rules are indisputable. We put ourselves in the position of being able to judge and find fault in everyone else around us. Showing yourself strong does not work all the time. We all can be vulnerable. Example: I should never make mistakes.
- Emotional reasoning: Extremely relatable type of thinking. We believe that what we feel must be true, without evaluating it at all. If we feel bored, unloved, unintelligent, unsuccessful – we assume it’s true just because we have felt it. A lot of internal conflict arises out of the inability to reconcile our emotions with our thinking processes. This is so true; don’t believe everything you think. Analyse it and then move forward accordingly. Example: I feel hopeless, so the situation is hopeless.
- Being right: We always tried to prove that our opinions, actions, and choices are correct. Being wrong is associated with being bad or unworthy. Speak when you are angry and you will give the best speech you will always regret, beautiful quote and hence very relatable. In such situations, we should try to respond instead of reacting at the moment. Example: Arguing to prove a point, even if it damages relationships.
I was very fascinated by each and every type of thinking explained in the above points. I hope you all will get some insights about how we think and types of thinking mechanism. I have tried explaining the points in the simplest way possible. Do let me know in the comments how do you like it.
Thank you.
